Angel from Above - El Panecillo

Cotopaxi and El Panecillo

El Panecillo, which takes it's name from the elevation that is formed like a small piece of bread, was not only a stronghold of indigenous resistance against the advances of the Spanish conquistadors but also a source of irrigation for crops. Now, it provides amazing 360 degree panoramic views of Quito, Ecuador.

At a height of 3,000 meters above sea level, Loma del Panecillo is located in the southern half and center of the city. Chosen in pre-Inca times as a center of rituals and ceremonies, where a temple was erected to worship the Sun God, this mountain was called Shungoloma, in Quichua native language or heart of the Loma.

In 1976, the Spanish artist, Agustín de la Herrán Matorras, constructed an aluminum replica of the sculpture of the Virgin Mary from Quiteno, Bernardo de Legarda. This is considered the largest work in aluminum in the world as it consists of 7,000 pieces, and forms part of the majesty and beauty of the city known as the “Face of God.” Seen from all four cardinal points, this sculpture known as the Virgin of Quito, became the culmination of the colonial Quito School.

Today, El Panecillo, has become one of the main tourist attractions where you can take in the fresh Andean air while enjoying a beautiful view of the city and the mountain ranges that surround it. On a clear, sunny morning and with some luck you can see the picturesque Cotopaxi volcano. For history buffs there is a museum that explains the story behind the construction and the legacy of El Panecillo.

El Panecillo is just one of the many reasons travelers are choosing to visit Ecuador, so if Ecuador is on your bucket list don’t miss out on this top attraction that is worth admiring and impossible to forget.
